The previous year, during her first visit to Balmoral in 1998, Mrs Blair discovered her bag had been unpacked including "the entire contents of my distinctly ancient toilet bag with its range of unmentionables".

"This year [1999] I had been a little more circumspect, and had not packed my contraceptive equipment out of sheer embarrassment," she said. "As usual up there it has been bitterly cold, and what with one thing and another... But then, I thought, oh I can’t be. I’m too old. It must be the menopause."

The intimate details of the Balmoral visit are unlikely to be welcomed by the Palace nor are her comments on encounters she had with various members of the Royal Household, which are disclosed in her memoirs due to be published later this month.
